Played by Elena Gonzalez, Tony Norris and Bill Burke, members of the Springfed Band at a concert at The Coconino Center For The Arts in Flagstaff, AZ on January 18, 2008. It is Elena's first time on stage without her music - Tony took it away from her for her "baptism by fire" and she did a great job as is evidenced by the audiance reponse.
I learned this tune from the early recordings of Doc Watson and his family. I play with The Springfed Band. Band leader Tony Norris, is joined by Bill Burke Megan Buchanan on vocals, Elena Gonzalez on fiddle and me.
This tune features Megan Buchanan and Tony singing a tune Tony learned from an old black man with whom he worked some 40 years ago in Eastern KY. The old man had a great voice and Tony really enjoyed listening to him sing.
Tony and Megan do a nice job on this old spiritual.

Great old time tune. I learned the second part from a tape recording made at Tommy Jarrell's house over 40 years ago. I love the second part to this tune.

Megan is a great singer and spent 15 years in Ireland learning very old tunes and traditional Irish music. However, this song is a more modern piece but has the flavor of the traditional ballad.
Over 40 years ago, I used to go to the "old" and original Union Grove Fiddler's Convention that was sponsored by JP and Harper Van Hoy.
It was there that I met Tommy Thompson, Alan Jabor and many other oldtime greats.
This tune I learned from Alan Jabor.

This used to be a favorite of mine when I was learning the banjo. Still the same nice tune.
I start the tune with the two finger style my father taught me and move into the one finger style that I've developed over the years.
